Treatment of Early-stage Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

Surgery and radiation are the standard treatments for early-stage, non-small cell lung cancer. Now there's evidence chemotherapy may have a role, too. This is called adjuvant therapy, and research shows it can lead to increased survival.

" Across the globe and across the US cigarettes continue to. If you just look at the United States figures in the leading cause of and related -- both in men and women. Over 175000. -- is a year and over 106000. A year. If I were to list the top ten causes of lung cancer. One through nine would be cigarette smoking other causes. Can include in that healtheon. Radar has been tied to it. Other things. That cause other forms of -- like mesothelioma. But still the number one culprit is going to be a there are two main types of the most common form of lung cancers. Called non small cell lung cancer. About 15%. Of lung cancer is small cell lung cancer. Lung cancers don't stay put they -- and spread and how they do so is the basis of the system each non small cell lung."

" Cancer starts in the long teach him. And it. Grows into a tumor and that tumor if it stays where it started is stage one. If the tumor has spread to lymph nodes within -- into stage two if the cancer spread to lymph nodes in the center of the chest. That is stage three. And then if cancer cells into the bloodstream and move around the body that stage four."

" In most patients with stage one or stay tuned to the cancer is susceptible which means it can be removed surgically. If a patient as well -- treatment usually begins in operating. So early stage lung cancer is greeted with surgery. And generally that this is at least with -- low back to. There are three separate. Lobes or areas of your right and two on your left and a tumor falls within one of those discreet areas. Then that lobe is removed which encompasses the two."

" Radiation and sometimes it's too but mostly for people who were elderly frail or who otherwise cannot tolerate surgery. A lung cancer patient chance for survival depend on how the disease may have spread you have -- ones. And you have successful surgery and removal of cancer. Your chance of being alive in five years. Sixty to 80%. If you have -- to it. Forty to 60% and if you had staged three it's twenty to 40%. There's always the possibility of lung cancer returns after surgery that usually very dangerous situation. If lung cancer -- to come back after a successful surgery. Chances are it would come back someplace outside of the chest. Which means that the foreign the surgeon had a chance to take the cans are out cells had broken off gotten into the bloodstream and moved around the -- It's geared to those types of circulating. Cells that doctors have traditionally used chemotherapy. In treating other types of cancer. They're never had been any evidence the use of what gold and therapy had any value in lunch. Until recently."

" The international and long trial was large trial ever reported that one can't. Can that of 1900 patients. Who at the one through three lung cancer and we're surgically respected. Afterwards they were one of origins. Of -- in order. And the result so that there was a benefit. This was four point 1%. A modest benefit. But very much similar to the review of studies reported in 1995. That showed a 5% benefit years. Thus they on these results. As chemotherapy became the standard of care in early. This is."

" Big news. For the first time we have data to try try giving. Patients chemotherapy after their surgery. But well chemotherapy. Easier to manage than it has been in years past if you do something many people want to avoid. And the research doesn't offer much help deciding exactly which patients are most likely to -- it. The issue is of course if you're only improving. Five year survival by 5%. You have to treat. Nearly twenty patience. To save one. And so then there's the question. Which patient is."

" The one who we are going to help I -- to a -- that there is some benefit it's not that most Haitians want to be aggressive. They want to have surgery done they want the tumor taken out of them. And they want treatment to try and give it as good a chance possible to eradicate and cells that may be existing in their body at the time."

" Another possible use of chemotherapy and lung cancer might be even earlier before surgery it's called and -- adjuvant therapy the goal would be to shrink the tumor to make surgery easier. And to kill can't sell that may have already escaped from the original tumor."

" New management approaches certainly have their place and that's why there are several studies looking at this approach. However. We have not seen a positive study controlled manner. That is shown overall clinical benefit and therefore it's still considered chairman at this point but still being."

" The -- early -- non small cell lung cancer usually use and drug plus one or more additional drug including -- no -- being. Does he trachsel. Attacks. And sometimes targeted therapies like talk about it. Doctors are gaining important knowledge and new tools in the treatment of lung cancer but it remains a very serious disease. And no medical that will ever counter the damage done by cigarette. Often by a remarkably small number of them."

" When you think about smoking and lung cancer risk you have to think of a continuum and obviously if you smoke. A lot of cigarettes per day for many many years you have a much higher risk. If you smoked. Very little and for short amount of time in your life and you have a very low risk but if you smoked at all in your lifetime. Greater than a hundred cigarettes in your lifetime -- risk will always be slightly higher than someone who never know."
